Invasive pain treatment in chronic low back pain

The objective of this PhD-trajectory is to leverage the NDT-CLBP to better understand patients with chronic low back pain and persistent leg pain, to systematically monitor outcomes of invasive pain treatments, including neuromodulation, and to include invasive pain treatment as a treatment modality in the first NDT-CLBP decision moment.

The NDT-CLBP is a decision support tool for referrals to spinal surgery, conservative treatment or no intervention. This will be further developed with a fourth treatment modality ‘invasive pain treatment’ for patients with chronic low back pain, Failed Back Surgery Syndrome and persistent leg pain, indicative for neuromodulation. The PhD-trajectory will focus on several aspects regarding the invasive pain treatment, such as continuous outcome monitoring, prognostic profiles after invasive pain treatment, evaluating the cost-effectiveness and implementation of the new model. With this project, the Sint Maartenskliniek and the RadboudUMC aim to lay the foundation for a Nijmegen Center for Neuromodulation.
