3D-techniques for improvement and evaluation of knee implants

Several studies are using 3D analysis, 3D printed devices and artificial intelligence to examine the safety and function of knee replacements.

Treatment of end-stage knee osteoarthritis is often surgical, with innovation playing a major role. New knee implants are developed, which we evaluate with 3D X-ray analysis to examine whether they stay firmly in the bone and whether the knee moves naturally with the prosthesis. Sometimes 3D printed molds are also used during surgery to best match the placement to the patient's anatomy. After knee replacement surgery, artificial intelligence (AI) can also be used to detect on an X-ray any loosening of a knee prosthesis where it is still difficult for the orthopaedist to see it.
